Empowering Young Learners Through Structured Pedagogy & Social-Emotional Learning

Empowering Togo's rural primary grade students through Teachers training.

We aim to address the lack of foundational literacy and numeracy skills among primary-grade students in rural areas by training teachers in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies embedded in a structured pedagogy. This offers a unique solution that improves student proficiency in reading and mathematics, reaching thousands of teachers and students to break the learning poverty cycle and improve learning outcomes.

Education in Togo

  • In 2019, 61% of students did not reach the minimum skill level in reading and writing and 63% of students did not reach the minimum skill level in mathematics.

  • 25% of primary school students are in a class with 57 students or more.

  • 12.5% of students dropped out of school in 2019, due to external factors like having to support their family

What we do

We select high-impact Teachers from across the region and support them to be able to come to our training campus. We then share tools and resources with them and help them collaborate on new methods of education in Togo Africa. After this intensive session we maintain communication and they become part of our Teacher network, that helps them continue to work together and share ideas while back in their own spaces.

The initiative, since its launch, has reached 2,400 students and helped train Teachers to generate a ripple effect in the educational community. We are on track to reach 24,000 in 2025.

Funding and Partnerships

Speech Spark has secured a $5,000 grant from the Ban Ki Moon Centre and $100,000 USD from UNESCO Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development. We continue to seek partnerships with governments, NGOs, and education focused organisations to scale its impact.
